Recipient Story

Carl’s Story

My name is Carl Fortin. Growing up, my passion was freestyle skiing. I spent every weekend at the ski hill, competing from a young age. I loved the progression, the community, and the challenges that came with the sport.

When I was around 14 years old, a different kind of challenge appeared. I was diagnosed with keratoconus—an eye condition where the cornea, the clear dome-shaped front of your eye, becomes thinner and gradually bulges outward into a cone shape. It affects about 1 in 2,000 people and causes blurry, distorted vision that worsens over time.

My right eye was much worse, and I was told I might one day need a corneal transplant. In 2016, that day arrived. I became the lucky recipient of a new cornea — the first step in getting better. Over time, it gave me the strength to take charge of my condition and seek more help. Part of me wanted to honour my donor by doing everything I could to improve my sight.

The journey from there wasn’t linear. There were good days and hard days. Vision would improve, but each time stitches were removed, things could change — sometimes for the better, sometimes not. I learned to gain perspective, to trust the process, and to lean on the people and resources around me.

Now, all the stitches are gone. In 2023, I was finally able to correct my vision with laser surgery — something that wasn’t possible before the transplant. I now get to wake up every day with clear vision. It’s lifted so much uncertainty, anxiety, and mental weight. The best part is being able to enjoy the sports that make me feel alive — mountain biking, skiing, snowboarding, surfing, and golfing. These are more than just hobbies for me; they’re a way to connect, to keep challenging myself, and to celebrate life.

I want to take a moment to acknowledge my donor and their family. I’m deeply sorry for their loss, and beyond grateful for the incredible gift I received. I promise to take care of it — and to live a life that honours that generosity. I know there are no words that can truly express how grateful I am for the gift I received. Your loved one has given me something priceless — the ability to see clearly again and live fully.
