Donor Story

Sarah’s Story

The first thing I noticed about my future wife was her beautiful eyes. That was 25 years ago, and we have been married for the last 23 years.

Sarah had always been concerned with doing whatever she could to help her family, friends and anyone she came to meet. Her help would come in many forms not the least of which was her humour. During our last week in hospital, she was asked if she would be willing to donate her corneas as that was the one donation that was possible. She responded to the doctors with “of course, look at them – I mean who wouldn’t want these?!”

Sarah had spoken many times about being an organ donor but was not eligible due to her Crohn’s disease, so she was happy to know that she could make a contribution that would help someone else.

After she was diagnosed with Neuroendocrine carcinoma in June of 2023, we knew that we wouldn’t have as long together as we had planned. The last year, while being indescribably challenging, was also an amazing time that I would never want to miss a minute of. I am so very thankful that Sarah knew before she passed that her gift would change someone else’s life and that those beautiful eyes live on.
